Tineola bisselliella is a nocturnal butterfly we refer to as a ‘clothes moth’, a peaceful and introverted insect that thrives in dark, quiet living spaces. Just as cabbage moth larvae chew holes through kale and broccoli leaves in the garden, so to the clothing moth larvae munch tiny holes in natural fabrics. And if you’re anything like us, you appreciate vintage rugs, furniture and clothing and occasionally bring them into your home. But what if that textile isn’t properly sanitized before entering your home? Clothes moths are a real and destructive possibility!
Textiles like wool, cotton, hemp, bamboo, linen, fur, feathers, cashmere, leather are all edible fabrics for the clothes moth. They make for a delicious meal for the hungry larvae in search of their favorite protein source- keratin.
Moths are most active from May-October with an unusually long period in the larval stage (around 50 days) all the while they are feeding and growing. Although they are tiny insects and their eggs are almost microscopic, adult male moths can be spotted flying around, and if you see one, chances are you are likely to have a well-established infestation.
So what’s the good news?
Our Sacred Duo works! Just like in the garden & on your houseplants, Sacred Leaf Tonic controls a moth infestation in our homes by both repelling the adults from setting up a home and laying eggs, and also by disrupting and suppressing the appetite and ability to reproduce for those who have already moved in. We encourage using these highly concentrated duo as a repellent first, so the need for spraying is a last resort, but understand how heartbreaking it can be to lose a treasured cashmere sweater too.
The combination of organic Sacred Leaf Tonic and Sacred Soil Tonic can safely and efficiently be applied around your home from your closet to your pantry (yes! It's effective for pantry moths too) as both natural, non toxic insecticide and repellent. Please note that when spraying directly on your clothing, it may stain silks and delicates. We recommend cleaning these according to individual instructions while treating other fabrics with Sacred Duo. Next, we encourage saturating a cloth or cotton balls with the mixture and placing them throughout your closet and in the corner of your pantry and kitchen cupboards as an effective repellent.
As always, sending out the love for a healthier, more sustainable future for our society and the planet, including the moths!
