What do you need to know about Neem oil? It’s AHHHMAZING! That about sums it up.
Would you like me to wax poetic? Gladly.
The fast-growing Neem tree is native to the subtropical regions of the world like India and Southeast Asia and is a vital resource. Virtually every part of the tree is useful! Bark, resin, seed, wood, leaf, flower and stem are used as ingredients in cosmetics, hair products, medicines, dental hygiene, as a source of food, honey, for pet care, as a fertilizer and insect repellent.
With its long list of antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and anti inflammatory properties, I could literally go on for pages listing the practical uses this incredibly resourceful tree provides! But today, let’s just focus on one theme: how Neem is the perfect natural remedy for preventing and battling pests, fungus and bacteria on your houseplants and in your garden.
Neem is an organic, non toxic and biodegradable solution that doesn’t harm the environment or your home while it completely rids your plants of harmful insects, fungus and bacteria. It works in a variety of ways to treat plant pests; as an insect repellent so new insects avoid your plants, as a hormone disruptor so the pests do not reproduce and as an appetite suppressant so the insects who have already set up homes on your plants no longer thrive. As for your garden, it’s perfectly safe to apply up until the day you harvest! Neem doesn’t pollute our streams or rivers, and it actually feeds the soil and helps your plants to thrive (not that I recommend feeding your soil
Our Sacred Plant Care Duo are concentrated plant tonics to treat a variety of home and garden issues, naturally.
Up until this year, I had a hard time using Neem oil successfully and I realized I had kind of been ignoring it for a few reasons. One, I didn’t understand how it worked. I thought one treatment was enough….nope! It’s best to treat your plants for a few weeks, every few days is best. I find it most effective to let the Neem and Soapnut (more on that later) work their magic overnight, then I rinse the plant with water the next day and treat again a few days later. I do this for a few weeks until all signs of pest or fungus or bacteria have vanished.
Two, I didn’t like how the Neem oil mixed (or rather didn’t mix) with water and left a gloppy, oily residue. I’d always heard a dash of castile or dish soap would help, but quickly learned how that is actually quite harmful to the cuticle layer of the leaves of your already compromised plant. Not a good idea! And that my friends, is when I learned about the magic of Soapnut--Hooray! Another tree based oil to the rescue! Just a few drops of this amazing oil derived from the seeds of the Soapnut Tree emulsifies the Neem oil and water mixture to perfection, making it easy to apply (without all the oily gloppiness) and sprays on delicately in a fine mist allowing the medicine to penetrate leaves beautifully without jeopardizing their health.
I’ve been treating my houseplants with this Plant Care Duo now for over a year with incredible results and have recently brought it into my organic gardening routine too! Neem is an effective treatment for: aphids, thrips, fungus gnats, white fly, rust, blight, powdery mildew and so much more! So happy to share this knowledge and these incredible tonics with you all as the Sacred Elements community continues to expand, learn and thrive! Happy growing to you all.
Be well friends!
