Onions and leeks are biennial, first growing “vegetatively,” forming roots, leaves and other plant growth then they develop the large bulb and set flowers and seeds.
This heirloom variety is also known as “torpedo” on account of their elongated shape, Red Long is a superb old variety from Southern Italy, a region famous for its sweet onions. Very beautiful, deep wine red color and quite sweet are perfect for panzanella or to top off a baked dish. Can be stored about 5-6 months, longer than most sweet onions.
Planting instructions: Cool weather crop. Onion seeds can be planted in both the spring and fall, plant onion seeds 1-2 inches apart in rich soil in full to part sun outdoors when the weather is cool–but not freezing.
To start onion seedlings indoors in late winter in a windowsill or under grow lights, fill a container nearly to the top with a seed starting mix and place seed about 1/2-inch deep, cover them lightly with more soil mix and water. Keep moist for best germination and move outdoors when temps get above freezing at night.
