Sacred Soil Tonic can be used as both a soil drench and as a foliar feed. We recommend using 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per 16 ounces of water or 10ml tonic to one gallon water, mix and water into the soil or spray your whole plant. For heavy feeding plants we recommend doing up to 20ml per one gallon water.
Sacred Leaf Tonic is best used solely as a foliar spray once weekly for regular care and leaf cleaning or more frequently if dealing with an active pest infestation. Always shake the bottle first! We recommend using 1/4 teaspoon per 16 ounces of water or 10ml tonic to one gallon water, mixing well (or blending), and spraying down your entire plant. Be sure to spray the fronts and undersides of leaves, stems, petioles, etc to ensure every inch of your plant is able to drink in the plant medicines!
*We have found the more velvety leaved plants (Anthuriums, Philodendron Micans, etc) thrive on a slightly lower dosage of Sacred Leaf Tonic. 5ml tonic/ gal of water is the sweet spot to get them glowing. Evening application recommended, avoid times of intense light/heat. Spot test sensitive plants & wait 24-48hrs before applying to the entire plant(s). SHAKE BOTTLE WELL BEFORE USE! For extra strength use 15ml/ gal water.
NOTE: Plants that have a thick chalky white coating such as certain succulents, air plants, staghorn ferns, and banana plants have a protective layer called an epicuticular wax. This hydrophobic coating acts as a natural sunscreen for your plant, so avoid spraying the foliage. Instead give plants with this epicuticular wax soil drenches with Sacred Soil Tonic.
*Pure, cold pressed neem oil solidifies around 55 degrees Fahrenheit and below, so natural separation will occur. For this reason, we recommend running the Sacred Leaf Tonic bottle under warm water until it melts and shake well before using!

Sacred Soil Bath (one gallon application)
You will need: Sacred Soil Tonic + H2O + Jar or jug with lid
-Pour 10-20ml (2-4 teaspoons) of Sacred Soil Tonic into jar
-Add 3/4 of the water, this allows empty space inside for the mixture to have space to be properly agitated and extra foamy!
-Close lid and shake hard for 30-45 seconds until foamy
-Add remaining water to fulfill the proper ratio of 10ml (2 tsps) for a one gallon maintenance application or 20ml (4 tsps) for active pest infestation application
-Pour *slowly* and enjoy the sound of saponin-rich botanicals sinking into your soil nourishing your plants from the inside out!
*We recommend feeding while plants are receiving plenty of light, it’s best to offer these baths during the growing season or while growing under lights.
*Note: We use the higher dosage when dealing with pests and the lower for general nourishment

Through our years of hands on research coupled with countless testimonials from our customers experiences, pests like fungus gnats, spider mites, root aphids, thrips, scale, mealybugs don’t survive on plants while using our tonics.
Consistency with soil drenches and foliar applications is key, especially when knocking out the whole life cycle of soil borne pests.
Keep at it and your plants will thank you!

For soil borne pests such as fungus gnats and root aphids, we recommend giving your plants a Sacred Soil Bath using Sacred Soil Tonic at every watering at extra strength (20ml/gal) for the first month. After the first month, switch back to a maintenance dosage (10-15ml) at each watering going forward.
Be sure to allow the soil to dry out sufficiently between waterings. Keep in mind that frequency of watering and dry time are plant and your ambient environment dependent.
For optimal results and to speed up your plant’s recovery, pair this ritual with using sticky fly paper. We find cutting the paper into smaller pieces and sticking it inside the pot most effective as the larvae hatch and immediately get trapped. Spray the top two inches of your soil with Sacred Leaf Tonic to ensure maximum benefits when ridding soil borne pests. You can even spray your pot for an added layer of protection!
For all other pests, we suggest giving you plants Sacred Soil Baths in addition to spraying your plants (Be sure to spray the front and undersides of leaves, stems, petioles, etc) with Sacred Leaf Tonic once a day for a few days. Take a day off and observe any changes, then continue with the tonics every other day for a week. Spray every two days the following week then continue at once a week going forward for a few months.

Absolutely not! Sacred Soil Tonic was specifically formulated for soil drenching for simultaneous IPM and fertilization. This Tonic contains plant medicine extracts such as neem seed, leaf, and bark that work synergy with microbes in the soil. Neem alone has been shown to attract earthworms, mycorrhizal fungi, and micro flora + enhances overall soil fertility.
Soil drenching with Soil Tonic encourages healthy life to flourish while wiping out any pests or pathogens in the soil.

First of all, rest assured there is nothing wrong with your plant or with the Sacred Soil Tonic. Topsoil mold is a normal result of mold production when plants are either not getting enough sunlight or have been damp for too long or are not receiving enough aeration, or all of the above! When we add the live and active ingredients in our Soil Tonic, these molds (that are already present in the soil) can be activated and show signs of growth. Molds are a normal and healthy part of indoor and outdoor soil and considered harmless but under the right conditions can take off and thrive.
Here are a few things you can do to alleviate the overproduction of topsoil mold:
Simply scrape off the top inch of soil and allow the soil more light exposure giving it extra light from either a grow light or the sun. After a few days to a week you can add a new layer of dry topsoil and begin watering with Sacred Soil Tonic again.
Or you can repot your plants with fresh soil and ensure it has plenty of drainage (consider adding vermiculite or perlite if the soil is too compacted).

The Soil Tonic contains plant medicine extracts such as neem seed, leaf, and bark that work in synergy with microbes in the soil. In their native habitat, neem trees form beneficial mycorrhizal relationships with the soil in addition to protecting against pests and pathogens.
As neem trees shed their leaves, organic matter is returned to the Earth and soil fertility is enhanced. Through decomposition, earthworms, mycorrhizal fungi, and micro flora are all magnetized to this nutrient rich detritus creating a biologically abundant closed loop system.
In the same way neem trees create symbiosis with surrounding soil life, watering your plant babies with Sacred Soil Tonic encourages healthy life to flourish while wiping out any unwanted pests or pathogens.
Our Tonics restore balance to soil systems for health that radiates from the inside out.

Yes - both the Sacred Soil and the Sacred Leaf Tonics are safe and very beneficial to your garden and outdoor plants, be them edible or not. They contain 100% Organic Ingredients, strengthen plant immunity and help repel common pests, as well as they feed microbes in the soil and attract pollinators. The only thing to be cautious about while using the Sacred Leaf Tonic outside specifically is to avoid spraying your plants around periods of direct sunlight, as its formula contains essential oils that might naturally burn or leave spots on your leaves.

Our tonics actually attract pollinators with terpene rich plant medicines such as lemon verbena, peppermint, and citrus. These plants all contain compounds that attract pollinators and beneficial insects while also warding off pests! These plant medicines have an innate intelligence and built-in mechanisms to protect themselves.
These same compounds that these plants produces are extracted, concentrated, and infused into our tonics for plants to absorb. Because of this, when you spray your garden, you may actually notice pollinators buzzing around afterwards as they are drawn to these aromas , and now they have them all in a single location!

For Sacred Soil Tonic, we recommend you soil drench once weekly or whenever your plants need to be watered during the growing season.
When using Sacred Leaf Tonic, we recommend you shower plants once weekly or more often during an active pest infestation.
When daylight starts decreasing and winter approaches, we recommend using the tonics less often (unless you are supplementing with grow lights in your space). You can either half your regular dosage or apply our tonics at the regular dosage just once or twice monthly.

The short answer is yes, but in a modified way.
Leca is a lightweight expanded clay aggregate. Sacred Soil Tonic was created to nourish the ecosystem between your plants and the soil, not just between leca (a baked clay substrate) and water.
Our tonics are made with living botanical organisims which, if left in water for too long, will begin to decompose.
So, here's what we recommend:
During the growing season, use Sacred Soil Tonic as a supplement. One time per month add a half dose 1 teaspoon per gallon, to your water and apply to lecca for up to 24 hours, like a boost of vitamins! Then, rinse clean and replace with new water.

Yes, absolutely! Both of our Tonics contain extracts of plant medicine.
Neem actually increases flavor and aroma of food & medicine crops because of its potent concentrations of sulfur! Plus you can harvest from your garden the same day you spray as our tonics are food grade and 100% organic.

The Tonics are 100% natural and non-toxic to both pets and human. However, we suggest quarantining your plants that you’ll be spraying consistently to treat pest infestation. The oil typically takes a few days to soak in completely, so just to be safe we suggest moving your freshly sprayed plants to a space where your furry friends won’t be able to access them.
Certain essential oils such as lavender can be harmful to pets when used improperly, so we recommend doing a bit of research to determine if this will be best for your situation. From our experience, we haven’t had any issues with our own pets (cats and dogs) after nearly four years of regular and consistent use.

The Sacred Tonics are safe to use on most plants with the exception of our Sacred Leaf Tonic on plants that have a waxy coating (aka epicuticular wax), such as certain succulents and cacti, air plants, and Staghorn ferns.
Epicuticular wax is a layer of whitish film on the leaves, stems and fruits of a wide variety of plants. You can find it on blueberries, plums, red grapes, apples, kale and many succulents. It forms on the outer cuticle of the plant’s skin. This wax makes water bead up, rather than truly wet the plant at the same time, it helps the plant stay hydrated and helps it retain moisture. Epicuticular wax also reflects UV radiation, acting essentially as a sunscreen, preventing damage to the plant in the form of sunburn.
Finally, it tends to make the surface more difficult for insects to walk on or to lay their eggs.

The history of Marimo can be traced back to a few freshwater lakes around Europe and Japan. The most well known is Lake Akan, Japan where up to 6,000,000 marimo grow slowly in the cold, bowl-shaped freshwater lake. Marimo were first discovered in 1820 by Anton E. Sauter, who happened upon the curious green balls in Lake Zell, Austria. Later, Japanese botanist Tatsuhiko Kawakami in 1898, deemed them Marimo, ‘Mari’ meaning ball and ‘Mo’ meaning seaweed, algae or aquatic plant.
Many of you have probably heard of the folklore around marimo: two lovers, unable to be united, she the daughter of a chief and he a commoner, run away together but fall into Lake Akan and drown, their hearts becoming the first marimo. Sweet, tragic and definitely memorable! Today, in Japan and now all over the world, marimo are given as a token of love, and offered as a gift for your heart’s deepest desire.

In 1921 Marimo were designated a National Treasure in Japan. However, as Lake Akan and the surrounding area began to develop, the number of people wishing to possess this strangely beautiful algae increased too. Despite their new classification as a protected species, their numbers dwindled as a result of illegal harvesting, the people of Lake Akan looked for ways to protect Marimo against extinction. And in 1950 the first Marimo Festival was conceived to inspire people to actively protect and honor the endangered algae of Lake Akan.
Today, Marimo are grown sustainably in farms across Japan and throughout Eastern Europe. The Marimo we curated and sell in our shop are grown and harvested from a responsible source with the utmost care and attention to the environment. We want to keep Marimo happily thriving and untouched in their natural, protected habitat too! We only source from one trusted supplier so we can continue to encourage people to bring them into their homes to grow, educate and inspire natural world connection!

Marimo’s an excellent choice for beginning houseplant enthusiasts and long time plant parents alike. Since Marimo need very little attention, they are the perfect plants for kids who want their very own houseplant, a wonderful gift for newlyweds as they are a symbol of love, a lovely heirloom plant that can be passed down from generation to generation.

We recommend housing your marimo in an open, glass vessel. You may add cleaned and rinsed rocks, crystals, shells, other aquatic plants and fish to the vessel (care tips are different once you add a fish). For those of you who have a curious cat & need to put a lid on your marimo, we recommend one that breathes for optimal air circulation. Consider the natural environment of marimo, lakes don’t have lids!

We like to clean the marimo vessel every two-three weeks but they can easily go longer, up to a month or so. To wash the marimo, gently remove from the vessel and squeeze each Marimo gently but firmly (like a hug) with two cupped hands to avoid tearing, then roll hands together in a circular motion to reshape. To clean the vessel and rocks, shells or crystals, dump out old water, rinse and wipe down surfaces with a clean sponge or cloth, be mindful of soap residue, just use water with the scrubbing motion to clean and then rinse thoroughly. Maybe have a dedicated sponge just for marimo! Refill vessel with cold tap/distilled water and add a dash of aquarium or sea salt. Gently clean, rinse & replace rocks or decorative crystals along with marimo and place in indirect light to display. We recommend using a lightly dampened cloth with a dash of vinegar to clean the outside and inside of the glass vessel to keep the surface looking bright and clean without smudges or older water line marks.
Bonus Tips:
- During the warmer months you can add a handful of ice cubes or pop the entire vessel into the refrigerator for a few days to give marimo a little vacation!
- We also recommend adding carbonated water 1-2 parts carbonated water to tap or distilled water, once every month or so. The CO2 boosts photosynthesis and it’s so fun to watch teeny tiny bubbles collect along the surface of the marimo.
- Adding a pinch of Marimo Salt to their water helps prevent any grey or brown spotting while also reducing biofilm (a slimy film that floats in and on top of the water) while keeping them feeling right at home.

Adding other plants or animals to your marimo is no problem. If you’d like to build your own indoor water garden and include marimo for their amazing shape and texture-go for it! If you want to give your freshwater fish a few green friends to keep them company and help them feel safe, no problem. Just be sure to follow all instructions for proper fish care and clean your Marimo as suggested above.

When Marimo photosynthesize in their natural environment, they produce oxygen, making them buoyant & keeping them closer to the surface of the water. When the light fades, marimo no longer photosynthesize and they descend once again to hang out at the bottom of the lake. The second reason marimo float is due to their circadian rhythm. We cover these concepts in our new downloadable lesson plan Volume 1-3 of Sacred Elements Plant School. Their unique round shape keep marimo photosynthesizing no matter how they roll which is vital to keeping them from getting sunburnt.
Marimo need movement! Give your marimo vessel a little swirling action every so often to keep them moving and feeling like they’re right at home among the soft lake currents.

If you notice a layer of bubbles and/or a sliminess on the surface of the water it is most likely the mucilage algae produce for locomotion. Not to worry! Your Marimo are moving around either to photosynthesize more, or they are in a place with too much sunlight and are trying to get away from that exposure. Just give your vase a thorough cleaning to remove any build up, gently rinse the Marimo and a pinch of Marimo Salt to the new water.

This happens if the filaments detach from each other, which is generally the result of handling. About 1 in every 25 we have in our collection do this too. It's quite normal. These magical orbs grow very slowly, so it'll take time for them to regrow into a spherical shape. You can encourage that by gently rolling the Marimo between the palms of your hands each time you clean to reform their shape and also by giving the water a gentle swirl often to create a rolling motion in the water, like a gentle current.
