Wondering why your plants are looking sad, not growing, or pale in color? They might be hungry! Here's a quick checklist to understand what your houseplants are trying to tell you.
- Is your plant getting adequate light? (is it close to a window or under grow lights?)
- Does your plant have pests? (most are tiny and sneaky so take a close look at the leaves, front and back)
- Is your plant hydrated adequately? (hydrophobic soil repels hydration and dehydrates the root system)
- Is your plant root-bound (a root-bound plant looks hungry because it has too little soil left in the pot and is unable to access what it needs)
- Is your plant over potted? (opposite to a root-bound plant, if your plant is swimming in a sea of soil, the roots have a hard time balancing hydration)
If the answer is no to these, then begin feeding your plants!
If you answered yes to the pest question, click into our step by step blog post library for natural and stress free guidance for pest care!
Still unsure? Then next, perform a quick nutrient deficiency test:
1. Are the newer leaves smaller than the older ones?
2. Are the leaves pale or yellowing?
3. Has new growth slowed or come to a standstill?
If you answered “no” to the first checklist and “yes” to any of these, your plants are wanting more nutrients!
In summary, when should you feed your plants?
When they are getting adequate light, hydration and are properly potted.
Light: we like to think of it in human terms. Feeding our plants extra nutrients when they are not getting abundant light is like eating too much food and then sitting around without exercising. If we’re not able to use the energy that we put into our bodies, we can become unhealthy. The same goes for plants. The way plants use energy is through photosynthesis, turning light energy into food and utilizing it to grow strong and healthy.
Can you feed your plants year round?
Yes! Just as long as they are receiving enough light to use added nutrients. If you live in a climate where the sun shines often or are growing your plants under lights, then you can absolutely use our Tonics year round and enjoy the amazing growth and glow!
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we begin adding Sacred Soil Tonic to each watering around March and continue into the early fall and are still amazed by the results year after year! Plants that glow and grow beautifully and remain pest free too!
But don’t take our word for it, check out our library of testimonials from happy customers who have been using our tonics for years.
Sending you love for an abundant growing season.
